Here’s to 9 Years, 7 Plates, & Purple Flowers

Today marks nine years. The day before my first day of high school. It seriously feels like yesterday that my sweet little sister, Emily, went to heaven after her two and a half year two-time battle to cancer. Up until a few years ago February 24th has always been a bitter sweet day. Today I choose to make it all sweet and leave out the bitterness.

For the first few years, against what I so strongly believed in, I questioned the pain, the hurt, and the grieving. There were days I would cry so hard I could barely breath and I was so emotionally worn out that I had no energy left to even think. My mom had always promised me that something so great and beautiful would come of all this. I was doubtful amidst my heartache. I couldn’t see past each day and my hope was small. I remember setting the dinner table each night. I would still grab seven plates like I always did and then found myself having to put one back. And sitting at the quiet dinner table thinking “someone is missing…”. We now had an extra seat in the car, her bed was no longer occupied in my room, her toys stayed in the same place, the IV polls and boxes full of medical supplies were gone. It was all the little things each day that were a constant reminder of her.

Today I choose to see beauty. Today my heart is happy. If it weren’t for Emily and growing up so fast at a young age I most definitely wouldn’t have been ready to get married, which means I wouldn’t have Justin (I can’t even fathom that idea)…and some of my closest friends I met through hospital get togethers, camp, and such. I can’t imagine my life any other way. The Lord promises that He heals the broken-hearted. It took me a while to allow him to do so, but now my life is SO BLESSED and FRUITFUL after the pain. Today I celebrate Emily, her favorite color purple, her life, her love for Jesus, and the joy that came from the suffering. I am so thankful for her (exactly) 10 1/2 years here on earth. She taught me that life is too short to not share the love of Jesus with everyone. I still miss her everyday, but my heart is healing, and I count my loss a blessing.

And because life is too short to spend all your days working, I took a day to myself to sleep in, snuggle with Milo, cook in the kitchen (you check out what I made HERE), bake cookies, and think about all the ways my life is blessed because of her. And when Justin walked in the door from work this evening, he had the biggest grin on his face and a bouquet of purple flowers in his hand. YES…I am blessed.

Happy 9 years in Heaven Little Lee. Love you and miss you!

xoxo

I remember you telling me her story in 9th grade at a sleepover at Resha's house, and how amazed I was by her, when I didn't even know her! It stuck with me all these years… An amazing heart illuminates! <3

Kaley & Joel | Bates Nut Farm Wedding

Oh Joel and Kaley…these two are one of the sweetest couples we know. Kaley has a heart of gold, is always smiling, and is just plain adorable. Joel is hilarious when you least expect it and we love how fashionable he is.

Justin and I loved every minute of their wedding, from getting ready with all the girls to the crazy dance party at the end of the night. These people sure know how to dance! Joel and Kaley come from incredible families who know how to love and they love hard. One of my favorite things about a wedding day is seeing how proud parents are of their children. And I LOVE when a grooms father gets to marry the two of them. Joel and Kaley’s wedding was like staring at Pinterest square in the face. Everything was DIY and handmade with lots of love. I love how they pulled in Joel’s love for baseball with the table names, and all the groomsmen searching for the ring in cracker jack boxes during the ceremony. Kaley’s sister, Julia even made the hanger that her wedding dress hung from. Come on Julie..open an Etsy shop. I’m not even kidding. I love all the little details they put together.

Justin and I are so excited to spend lots more time with this darling couple! Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Smith! We love you guys!

Peter & Ashley | Villa Montalvo Estate Wedding

Words cannot describe how happy my heart is that these two are finally married. Peter and Ashley have known each other since they were babies. Their parents are best friends and have been spending their summers up at Pine Grove for as long as they can remember even though Peter and his family are from North Carolina and Ashley’s family is from San Jose, CA. Ashley eventually found herself on long phone calls with Peter while they were on opposite ends of the country. And then Peter moved to San Jose to finish school. Love was most definitely in the air. Peter proposed to Ashley at Pine Grove, where their families had spent all those summers together. Their love story is so sweet and precious. Ashley has a heart of gold and is stunning on the inside and out. Peter is so sweet and calm and loves Ashley with everything that he has.

I remember getting my first e-mail from Ashley which seems like ages ago now inquiring about her wedding. We had never met, but knew mutual people because of church. So Justin and I had these two over for dinner to talk about wedding things. What turned out to be like a 5 hour affair, we spent the majority of our time talking about life, love, and all the little sweet things…and very little about wedding photography. Peter and Ashley instantly became friends. We found ourselves going out for Thai food together, shopping, and going to the dog park with Milo. I can honestly say that Ashley has become a dear, sweet, close friend and I’m so thankful for her cheerfulness in my life, and her love for the Lord makes her even more beautiful than she already is.

There aren’t even words for how beautiful this wedding was an for all the love that was present. There is something so special about two families coming together to celebrate two hearts becoming one. Peter and Ashley come from incredible families that love their children like there’s no tomorrow. They make you feel like family when you’re around. I’ll just stop talking so you can see for yourself how amazing this wedding really was!

Peter and Ashley, I can’t even tell you how happy I am for the two of you and the way your lives honor the Lord shows in everything that you do. I’m so excited to see the great things He has for you..and for the beautiful babies you’ll make;)Love you guys! XOXO
